The beginnings of this holiday date back to the Middle Ages, to England. The patron saint, st. Valentine, was a Roman bishop who had the power to heal the sick. At least, according to one legend.
Valentine's Day are fortuitous to those sad in love, who lack the courage or cannot express their feelings. In Poland, Valentine's Day is celebrated only since a couple of years ago. It's celebrated by everyone, regardless of age or gender.
A Valentine's Day card may be slipped surreptitiously into one's pocket, mailbox, or sent by post. The receiver is usually a person for whom we care a lot, like friends, sometimes teachers or neighbours.
A forerunner in Poland is the night of Kupala, the night before June 24th. At this time women who were not engaged or married, to attract attention of young men, used magic tricks to gain their interest, e. g. they threw a sugar cube into their tea after carrying it in their armpit for nine days.
